When having a newborn baby, ensuring that she/he is sleeping safely and soundly is everything and swaddling is one of the greatest tools to help your little one sleeps and rest better.
What is swaddling?
Swaddling is like a comforting mom's embrace that wraps your baby, all day and night long. Wrapping up your baby in a swaddle gives your baby a sense of security after being out of the womb which can be soothing especially for preemies.
Why swaddling?
- helps alleviate discomfort from colic. Staying calm avoids tummy trouble and aids better digestion.
- helps your baby to fall asleep faster and helps them to stay asleep longer. Research shows swaddled babies were less likely to be awakened spontaneously and showed increases in sleep efficiency.
- keep your baby at a comfortable temperature. Your baby tiny body is not as efficient as an adult's body in regulating temperature.
- keep your baby sleeps safely on their back through the night. Studies have shown swaddling makes it easier for parents to keep their babies sleeping on their backs safely which is one of the best ways to reduce the risks of SIDS.
The different types of swaddles
Traditional swaddle blanket
As the name suggests, a blanket swaddle is a blanket folded and wrapped around a baby to keep their arms secure. The blanket swaddle is the most traditionally used swaddle.
Pros: It requires no special blanket, so you can use just about anything to wrap your baby in. But many blanket swaddles in the market are made of muslin and cotton as they are lightweight and comfortable for babies. And they have only one size to fit your growing baby, so they can last you a while and save you some $$.
Cons: And since the traditional blanket swaddles are made of pieces of loose cloths, it can be hard to learn how to swaddle your baby safely. Thus, it could come off easily or become loose if it is not properly tucked or wrapped.
Modern swaddle wrap
These wraps are the modern-day swaddle which makes swaddling easier in just a zap. Just slip the baby into the wrap, zip it up, and secure it with the Velcro band that prevents arm movement.
Pros: Swaddle wraps are easy to use especially for new parents. It makes diaper changing sessions a breeze with the zippers and Velcro band. These swaddle wraps can still be used through multiple developmental stages and grow with the baby.
Cons: Some swaddle wraps are not hip-healthy. So, make sure there's enough room for the hips and legs to move while giving a comfy fit on top. Frequent usage of the swaddle wraps may cause the Velcro band to wear out which may loosen the wrap and not be as snug.
However, there are no superior swaddles. Traditional or modern, it totally depends on your preference and mixing both of them are fine too! Shop here for our swaddles collection.
