Your little one's collection of soft toys is not just lifeless, stuffed objects but they are their best friends and comforters. These cuddle buddies in the form of floppy bunnies, adorable pups, or huggable bears need to be kept clean and in good condition to ensure they continue to bring joy and comfort for years to come. Here are some simple and easy ways to help you care for your child's plush toys.
#1 Check the care label
Before cleaning, always check the care instructions label that is usually attached to the plushie. Some soft toys, especially those with delicate materials, may need specific care to prevent damage. Some may suggest air drying or hand washing, so it is best to follow the guidelines provided by the manufacturers to preserve the soft toy's quality.
#2 Frequent spot cleaning
Use a damp cloth and gentle detergent to spot-clean any stains or spills. Scrub the affected area gently without soaking the soft toy. This is to ensure those plush toys that can't be machine-washed, need regular cleaning, or with delicate fabrics are not ruined.
#3 Machine-wash safely
If the soft toys are machine-washable, put them in a laundry bag or pillowcase to protect them during the wash cycle. Remember to use mild detergent and wash on a gentle/delicate cycle with cold water to prevent the soft toy's material and seams from damage. If there are detachable plastics such as noses, eyes, or accessories, take them off to avoid falling off or breaking.
#4 Do not use a dryer
After washing, soft toys must be air-dried. Lay them flat on a clean towel or hang them to dry. Do not use a tumble dryer as the heat can ruin the soft toys' fabrics, especially those with synthetic materials. For plush toys with a lot of stuffing, fluff them up while drying gently to keep their shape.
#5 Freshen soft toys up
After long hours of play and cuddles, these snuggling buddies may have unpleasant odours. To refresh them, sprinkle a small amount of baking soda inside the toy (or on the fabric) and let it sit for a few hours. Shake or gently brush the excess powder off. For a little scented boost, lightly spritz the soft toys with a diluted mix of water and lavender or baby-safe fabric spray.
#6 Store soft toys safely
When not in use, store the precious fur friends in a clean, dry place. A toy chest, hanging organizer, or rack can help keep the soft toys in mint condition while reducing the risk of dust and dirt buildup. For long-term storage, ensure the toys are completely dry before putting them in airtight containers to prevent mould growth. Consider placing a pack of silica gel in the container too!
#7 Repair minor damage
If your little one's favourite plush toy suffers wear and tear, try repairing it at home. For small tears and loose seams, stitch the fabric back together. If you are unsure how to revive a toy properly, consider consulting a professional toy repair service.
