7 Kid-Friendly Places To Explore To Get Into The Merdeka Spirit

It's August and you would already know what it means! It is that time of the year when our Jalur Gemilang is proudly flown on vehicles, storefronts, and houses. Hari Merdeka or Independence Day takes place every 31st of August with various fun activities and events happening across the country, leading up to the very day. Since strong patriotism and excitement are filling the air, there's no better time to take your kids to experience the Merdeka spirit first-hand by visiting these places!

 

1. Dataran Merdeka

This iconic landmark, situated at the heart of Kuala Lumpur, was where our independence was declared in 1957 and for many years, it has been the location of the Merdeka parade. It's a huge green-field area for your kids to run around happily or you may also join the free walking tour available to get a better understanding of Kuala Lumpur's history. Don't forget to snap a picture with one of the tallest flag poles in the world while you are there!

 

2. Sultan Abdul Samad Building

Named after the Sultan Selangor at the time, The Sultan Abdul Samad Building was once a British administrative office. It has a unique combination of architectural styles from Western and Gothic to Moorish influences. The beautiful architecture is interesting for adults and kids to see and appreciate.

 

3. National Monument

The National Monument is where a majestic bronze statue built in honour of the soldiers who died in the 12-year Malayan Emergency. Your kids can learn more about freedom and sacrifices through the statue that displays seven soldiers carrying the Malaysian flag, each depicting a certain quality of leadership; command, wariness, suffering, courage, strength, and sacrifice.

The surrounding forest, Taman Tugu, provides fun activities for you and your kids such as the the Taman Tugu trail for hiking. The routes are beginner-friendly and suitable for kids.

 

4. Islamic Arts Museum

The Islamic Arts Museum is deemed Southeast Asia's largest Islamic museum and home to various galleries from Quranic manuscripts to coin collections. There are also tons of activities available for your kids to participate in while you are exploring different galleries.

 

5. National Museum

Another great place to learn about Malaysian history is of course the National Museum. The place holds tons of artefacts, manuscripts, and background stories of Malaysia's diverse cultures as well as the history of our independence. Kids can join in activities conducted by the museum too!

 

6. Pasar Seni

Step into a vibrant marketplace of an Art Deco-style building where you can find a diverse collection of local artisans and handicrafts! It is a sensory haven for the young ones to explore with the sight of colourful batik fabrics, the touch of intricate wood carvings, and the scent of local herbal products. Some shops offer batik colouring if you and your family are up for it.

 

7. Prime Minister Memorials

Take this opportunity to expose your kids to the contributions of past prime ministers of Malaysia by visiting their memorials. The memorials house all archival, museum, and reading materials relating to the first three Malaysian prime ministers. It also exhibits the granite display of the Proclamation of Independence, a personal collection of books and photographs as well as cars.
