Merdeka Day is approaching! Our beloved country is celebrating its 66th year of independence this year. Instead of letting it be just another public holiday, why don't you turn it around this year and celebrate it the fun way? Here are 5 family-friendly ways to celebrate the momentous occasion.
1. Watch the National Day parade
There are two ways you can watch the parade — on TV or at Dataran Putrajaya. Preparations are in full swing and it is recommended that you take public transportation such as the MRT. Otherwise, wake the whole family up early in the morning to catch it on national TV!
2. Wear traditional outfits when you go out
Flaunt your beautiful cultural outfits when you and your family go out on Merdeka Day. The perfect time to show off our differences yet how united we are! After all, Malaysia is one of the racially and culturally diverse nations.
3. Travel locally
Malaysia has so many beautiful holiday spots. Try out a longhouse staycation in Borneo, go on a trip into nature at Taman Negara or drive to Pangkor Island for a beach getaway. The options are endless! This way you can support our local tourism and economy, too!
4. Learn to cook your favourite Malaysian dish
One of the best things about our country is the various cuisines we have from different parts of the states and people. What better way to spend your Merdeka Day with your family than to learn how to create your favourite dishes from scratch? There are tons of YouTube tutorials or you can ask your mom or relative to teach you!
5. Visit historical sites around the country
The more interesting way to learn about our nation's history is to pay a visit to the historical places. Learn about the Malay Sultanate's heritage by taking your family to the Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum or go up the Petronas Twin Towers to learn about the iconic towers (and a shopping spree at Suria KLCC, after :p)
