10% of the plastic produced every year worldwide winds up in the ocean. 70% of which finds its way to the ocean floor, where it will likely never degrade, leaving every square mile of ocean containing approximately 46,000 pieces of plastic. Another scary fact is an estimated 1,500 plastic bottles end up as waste in landfills or thrown in the ocean every second - with a huge portion of these plastic baby bottles.
Scary stuff right? That is not even touching on the hundreds of chemicals used to create these bottles which also are not microwave or heat safe. BPA free - we have all heard of it but what people do not realise is many plastics, including BPA-free plastics, contain other chemical plasticisers. Unfortunately, many plasticizers are also endocrine disruptors similar to BPA, which means that they could cause many of the same health issues. Some plasticisers used may be even be more dangerous for our children than BPA.
